The Future of B2B GTM: From Funnels to Revenue Systems

By Nectiv Global

B2B growth is evolving. The companies that win tomorrow will be the ones that stop treating marketing and sales as separate functions and start building connected revenue systems.

For years, the B2B go-to-market (GTM) model has revolved around a familiar funnel: generate awareness, capture leads, nurture prospects, convert opportunities and close deals. The framework provided structure and helped businesses understand how buyers moved towards a purchase.

But today’s B2B buying journey is rarely that linear. Buyers conduct independent research, engage across multiple channels, consult different stakeholders and often interact with a brand long before speaking to sales.

Meanwhile, marketing, sales and customer success teams may operate with different priorities, metrics and definitions of success. The result? Businesses generate activity but struggle to translate it into predictable revenue. This is where the next evolution of B2B GTM begins: moving from funnels to revenue systems.

1. The Traditional Funnel Has Its Limits

The traditional funnel assumes that prospects move through clearly defined stages, progressing from awareness to conversion. In reality, B2B buyers frequently move back and forth between these stages. They may discover a company through content, evaluate competitors independently, engage with sales, return to research and involve additional decision-makers before making a purchase.

A funnel can still help measure conversion. However, it doesn’t always capture the complexity of the wider buying journey. More importantly, it can encourage teams to optimise individual stages without understanding how those activities influence the overall business outcome. Generating more leads means little if those leads don’t become qualified opportunities. Closing new customers matters less if retention and expansion remain weak.

The challenge is no longer just moving prospects through a funnel. It’s connecting every part of the revenue journey.

2. Marketing and Sales Can No Longer Operate in Silos

One of the biggest barriers to B2B growth is the disconnect between marketing and sales. Marketing may focus on awareness, engagement and lead generation, while sales concentrates on pipeline and closures. Customer success enters later, often with limited involvement in the acquisition process. Each function may perform well against its own metrics while the business struggles to achieve its broader revenue goals.

A revenue-system approach changes the conversation. Instead of asking whether marketing is generating enough leads or sales is closing enough deals, businesses begin examining how these functions work together to attract, convert, retain and grow valuable customer relationships. This requires shared objectives, better visibility and a common understanding of what drives revenue.

3. From Lead Generation to Demand Creation

Traditional demand generation often places considerable emphasis on capturing existing interest through forms, campaigns and other lead-generation activities. But many B2B buyers begin their journey long before they are ready to engage with a sales team. They are identifying problems, exploring alternatives, assessing credibility and forming opinions about potential solutions.

This makes brand positioning, thought leadership, relevant content and consistent market presence increasingly important. The future of B2B GTM requires businesses to think beyond capturing demand that already exists. They must also build awareness, establish credibility and help the right audiences recognise the value of solving a problem.

Demand creation builds the foundation. Demand capture converts existing intent into commercial opportunities. Both matter.

4. Technology and AI Are Changing the Revenue Equation

AI, automation and connected data are reshaping how B2B teams research accounts, personalise communication, identify opportunities and measure performance. Tasks that once required significant manual effort can increasingly be supported by intelligent tools. However, technology alone does not create a strong GTM strategy When positioning is unclear, processes are disconnected or teams are working towards conflicting objectives, adding more tools can simply make the complexity harder to manage.

The opportunity lies in connecting technology to a clear business strategy—using it to improve visibility, decision-making and execution across the revenue journey. The companies that benefit most will not necessarily be those using the most tools. They will be those that integrate technology into a coherent operating model.

5. Revenue Growth Becomes a Shared Responsibility

In a connected revenue system, growth is not owned by one department Marketing contributes to market understanding, positioning and demand. Sales converts customer interest into commercial relationships. Customer success supports adoption, retention and expansion. Leadership aligns these functions around business priorities.

The objective is to create continuity across the customer lifecycle rather than treating every stage as an independent activity. This also changes how performance is evaluated. Beyond channel metrics and individual team targets, businesses need a broader view of pipeline quality, conversion, acquisition efficiency, retention and revenue growth. The emphasis shifts from measuring activity in isolation to understanding how the entire system performs.

What This Means for B2B Businesses

Moving from funnels to revenue systems doesn’t mean abandoning the funnel altogether. Funnels remain useful for analysing conversion and identifying bottlenecks. The shift is in how businesses use them. Instead of treating marketing, sales and customer success as separate stages, leaders need to understand how these functions interact, share information and influence business outcomes.

The question is no longer simply, “How do we generate more leads?”

It becomes:

“How do we build a connected GTM system that consistently turns market opportunity into sustainable revenue?”

That is a more strategic question—and one that becomes increasingly important as B2B markets grow more competitive and buyer journeys become more complex.

The Future Is Connected Growth

The next generation of B2B GTM will be defined by connected strategies, aligned teams, meaningful customer experiences and a clearer relationship between marketing investment and business outcomes. Funnels will continue to serve a purpose. But the broader system surrounding them will determine how effectively businesses create, capture and expand revenue. For leadership teams, the opportunity is to move beyond isolated campaigns and departmental targets towards a more integrated view of growth.

Because sustainable B2B growth doesn’t come from optimising one stage of the journey. It comes from making the entire revenue system work better together.
